 Our History and Heritage

The origins of Loomis date back to 1852, to those exciting days when Pony Express riders helped build the American west as well as the Alaska Gold Rush era, when armed mushers endured danger and hardship to provide safe transport into and out of the mines. It was during his time in Alaska that Lee Loomis really began to frame his thinking about secure transport. Twenty years later in 1925, Loomis introduced the first armored car west of the Mississippi. That vehicle known as “Old Number One” today resides in our Denver facility and though retired, still makes an occasional public appearance and enthusiastically runs.

You may be familiar with some of the famous names from our history. Buffalo Bill Cody, Wyatt Earp, Wild Bill Hickok, Bret Harte were all employees, teammates from another era. Of course Lee Loomis, William Fargo and Henry Wells are also very familiar names from our past. These founding fathers of our predecessor companies met and tamed the challenges of their respective frontiers. In them are embodied the foundational values that motivate and characterize the people of Loomis today.

Our timeline at right illustrates the development of Loomis over the past 150 plus years. You will note that our genealogy draws from Wells Fargo dating to the California Gold Rush; Loomis Armored with origins in the Alaska Gold Rush and Securitas which originated in Sweden in the 1930s. One key date in our history was 1997, when Loomis Armored acquired Wells Fargo Armored to create a national service network in the US under the name Loomis, Fargo & Co. Several years later, plans were developed to build an international leader in the industry. In 2001, Loomis, Fargo & Co. joined the family of Securitas AB, a diverse international security leader, with the understanding that the Loomis, Fargo US operations would eventually be combined with the Securitas European cash handling group and spunoff as an independent cash handling company. In 2007, the combined international cash handling group was renamed Loomis in preparation for the fulfillment of the plan originally launched in 2001.

While much has changed over our 150 plus years of history, the rich character and spirit of our founding fathers endures, and inspires the attitude of our Loomis teammates today. It makes a difference.
